Falling into thinking of classic and collectible cars as commodities is a trap fraught with danger. Are automobiles built to be traded like so much gold bullion or, as the definition of the word itself implies, a way to mobilize away from the mundane binds of otherwise limited existence? We’re going to argue the latter, and try not to forget that cars are ideally machines built to be driven. Please observe Juan Manuel Fangio drive a Maserati 250 around Modena circa 1950-something in the event of absent mind, and tell anyone that speaks of cars that drive themselves to discover trains, buses, boats, or perhaps rigid airships.
